English 09C: Thursday 11.10-12.10

Good morning,

This year you have worked with the British Isles. You have studied the five countries and worked with a famous British story - Matilda. This week we will shift our focus to the world's most popular sport - football.

Yesterday, you started watching the series "The English Game". We will watch one more episode today. Then it will be up to you if you want to continue watching it at home.

First, I would like you to discuss yesterday's episode in pairs:

1. "The game feeds the soul when they have nothing else that does it in their lives."
- James Walsh, the owner of the mill and Darwen FC

Have you ever felt that way about a sport or other activity? That it helps you cope with problems in life? Talk about when and how! If you haven't felt that way personally, discuss how this could be true for other people.

2. Do you think James Walsh was right to break the rules and pay two players to join his club? Why/why not?

3. If you had lived in England at the end of the 19th century, would you prefer to have lived an upper class life or a working class life then? Motivate your answer.

Take five minutes to talk about all this. After that you will share your thoughts with the rest of the class.

In two weeks, I will test you in pairs on oral interaction. You will have several different topics to choose from. Make sure you practice well today. Speak English all the time. An English speaking person should be able to understand you.

After the discussion we will start watching episode two. Remember that this is class work. That means you are all required to watch it. You do not have a choice. I heard that some of you were busy doing whatever you felt like during yesterday's class and that is of course not accepted.

All the best,
Susanna
