Writing Task: How to Make a Difference

How to make a difference (Lesson from Sara Bruun)

The story below is written by Loren Eisley:

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”
The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean.
The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”
“Son,” the man said, “Don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”

What does this story mean? Why do you think I wanted you to read it?

Think about the headline - How to make a difference. Why do you think we chose that headline? Do you think that You can make a difference? Think about your family, friends, school, municipality, Sweden and Europe? Is there anything you could do to make a difference?

1. Write down your own thoughts. I want you to be able to talk to a friend and to the whole class about your thoughts.
2. Tell your friend about how you can make a difference. Take notes so that you remember what your friend told you.
3.  Tell the whole class how your friend can make a difference.

Make a plan for a writing assignment next week. What are some of the things that you would like to change in this world? Give examples and motivate your opinions.
What can you and other people do to change the world and make it a better place to live?
