The United States: Civil Rights and Segregation II

Extra work

Some people think that there is less racism in the United States today than in the 1950s. Why might they think this?

What news stories have you heard about racism recently in the United States?

Grammar focus:

Collocations: Verb + preposition

Look at the following extract from the video about the civil rights movement:
  • 'Eventually 'Brown' led to more equitable housing and employment, voting rights, and more.'
The extract uses the verb lead and the preposition to. This verb can be used together with this preposition. Combinations of words that usually go together are called collocations. Other prepositions that collocate with lead include:
  • lead onto
  • lead out of
  • lead through
However, there are other prepositions that do not usually collocate with lead. For example:
  • about
  • in
It would sound very odd to an English speaker if you said, 'I was led in the room'.
It's important to learn collocations, as it will sound wrong to English speakers if you use the wrong preposition with a verb.
