Explore South Africa, Jamaica & Canada

We will explore and learn about the countries together and you will also do your own research about something in South Africa, Canada or Jamaica. What do you want to know more about? Maybe you are curious about their history, the nature and wild life, the school system, sports or their languages?

Start with watching short clips about each country!

Write between 300 and 600 words about one of the topics below. Write in a Word document or put pen to paper. I want you to use reliable sources and you must indicate which ones you used.

Write a factual text about South Africa, Canada or Jamaica.
  • General information about the chosen country: size, geography, the meaning of the flag, government, currency, languages, religion, cities, history, wild life, the school system etc.
  • Name some interesting tourist attractions one can visit and see.
  • Include comparisons between life in Sweden and life in chosen country.
Write a travel diary or a travel blog from South Africa, Canada or Jamaica
  • Write about an imaginary trip that you go on to the country you`ve chosen. Weave in facts about the places that you visit in your text. Include comparisons between life in Sweden and life in chosen country.

Pay It Forward

You have seen the movie Pay It Forward, and I want you to reflect over few things:

  • What did you think about the movie?
  • Did you like it? Why/why not?
  • Was there anything specific that caught your interest?
  • What do you think about Trevor and his intentions? Did he act properly when he tried to get his mother to be with his teacher?
  • Do you believe that anybody has the chance to make the world a better place? Explain your thoughts!
I want you to reflect over your own good deeds.

  • What are some random acts of kindness you practice?
  • Can you remember a time when someone has been really kind to you? What happened? How did you feel?
  • What are some reasons why people might hesitate to show kindness to others?
  • Who is the kindest person you know? Explain.

Homework for next week (Wednesday): Do something kind for your family!
Wether it is helping out with the laundry, doing the dishes, cooking food...The point is to make someone happy!

You are going to make an oral presentation about your good deed and these questions might help you on the way:
  • How was your good deed recieved by your family?
  • Were they surprised by your action?
  • Are they used to you helping them out?
  • How did you feel making someone happy?
  • Did you get a "Thank you"?

A letter came to you from someone named Claire:

Dear Student of 09B,
I am in a tricky situation and really need your advice. I heard that you have learned lots of things about love during the last weeks so could you please help me and tell me what I should do?

I had been together with this guy named Jim for more than four months and when we split up he quickly got into a new relationship with Anne, one of my best friends. Anne and Jim had a short but intense relationship and during that time I wasn’t seeing Anne at all. This was partly because I was very disappointed with what Anne had done and partly because I was still sore about losing Jim.

One day Jim called me and asked me out. I couldn’t believe my ears but I still agreed to meet him. I had promised myself never to meet him again but I thought that it could be nice to at least be friends. After all, Jim was good company and we used to have a lot of fun together.
Even if I didn’t consider meeting with Jim to be a regular date, I spent hours putting on my best make-up, fixing my hair and trying on every sweater in my wardrobe.

When we met at the restaurant I noticed that Jim hadn’t bothered to change his clothes after training. He was wearing a sloppy sweater and his hair is all tousled. I was somewhat disappointed but also a bit relieved as this clearly indicated that he had no intentions other than seeing me for a friendly chat. This evening we had the best time ever. In fact, we got on far better than we did while in a relationship. Jim made jokes about Anne and I felt so much more relaxed with him than I did while we were a couple. I felt good about being with Jim as if we were just two good old friends. After all that happened between us this was almost too good to be true!

But suddenly our conversation stopped. Jim gazed deeply into my eyes and all of a sudden I felt very confused. I managed to get out of the situation by calling the waiter and asking for the bill. Jim let me pay for the pizzas, something that he would never have done while we were together.

Before parting, Jim asked me if I would like to go fishing with him… I said that I would have to think about it, but now I have no idea what to tell him! What should I answer?

Kind regards,

Claire, 16, Brisbane

Real love

                            Bildresultat för real love

1. Listen and read

Listen to the text "Real Love" from What's Up 9 and read along with it: Sanoma Utbildning : Övningsmästaren (ovningsmastaren.se)

2. Did you get it?

How old was Dustin when he met Mandy?
What is in Mandy's own opinion her biggest failing [weakness, problem]?
What was the terrible lie that Mandy told Dustin when she broke up with him?

3. Talk about it

Some people think that teenagers can't be in love or they don't know what real love is. What can you say to prove them wrong?

Do you think that Dustin was the 'right one' for Mandy? Why/why not?

Do you think Mandy did the right thing to dump Dustin? Why/why not?

Why do you think Brie acted the way she did?

What advice would you give to Mandy in this situation?

4. Fill in the gaps and work with words
